Manas National Park, Assam named after the Manas river is a biosphere reserve and a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is located in the Himalayan foothills, borders the Royal Manas National Park in Bhutan. 

Apart from the Tiger and Leopard population, the park is known for its rare and endangered endemic wildlife such as

  • the Assam roofed turtle

  • Hispid hare

  • Golden langur

  • Clouded Leopard

  • and pygmy hog. 

 

The Manas hosts more than 450 species of birds. It has the largest population of the endangered Bengal florican to be found anywhere.

 

Only national park where you can sight 5 species of Hornbills- 

  • Wreathed hornbill, 

  • Rufous-necked hornbill, 

  • Great hornbills, 

  • Pied hornbills, 

  • Grey hornbills.

 

Other major bird species include -

Grey-lored Broadbill, Long-tailed Broadbill, jungle fowls, bulbuls, brahminy ducks, kalij pheasants, egrets, pelicans, fishing eagles, crested serpent-eagles, falcons, scarlet minivets, bee-eaters, mergansers, harriers, Indian peafowl, ospreys and herons.
